The Musical Innovator He Created Over 200 Khayaal Compositions

In the manner of the legendary court-composers of the Hindustani tradition, Pandit Amarnathji has contributed over 200 original khayaal compositions and several ragas to the nation’s classical repertoire. Among the ragas are Amarkali, Gunranjani, Audav Asavari, Maru Basant, Kafi Malhar and Shyam Bhoop. This achievement places him in a most distinguished and rare category of master-musicians of the nineteenth century — the vaagayekaars.

Panditji has thought out many original ragas and raga compounds, as well as adapted several Karnatic ragas into the Hindustani style, which now form an integral part of the repertoire of Hindustani music, and of his gharaana. Some of this creative output, both literary and musical, has been archived at the Indira Gandhi National Centre For The Arts, Delhi, and the Samvad Foundation, Mumbai.
